For the last year and a half, I have been working on a photo residency at Herman Melville’s Arrowhead.Arrowhead
I go there monthly, sometimes more, rarely less, and spend time taking pictures. Mostly focusing on the trees, the grand towering pines that Melville himself planted.
It started that way anyhow, but then I got into just the trees on the property in general. Large pines, Maple, black walnut, birch to name a few.
A classic New England forest with some gorgeous trailed carved throughout. And before the forest acres of open field, with a path winding around the whole thing.
Among My favorite places to be inspired.
The house itself, built in the 1780’s is also a marvel and something I love photographing. The trees on the lawn often cast shadows against the wood panels and the light through the leaves plays against the windowpanes.
I’ve photographed the property in Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Documenting the same trees as they change season to season.
It’s been really rewarding and fun for Me. if not challenging…
When I first started the project I was super healthy and able bodied. A bad knee injury (also related to photography) took Me out in the first year, and I spent many months hobbling and dragging and injured, braced leg around the fields.
I then had a rather emergent surgery this past Spring. We were supposed to have the grand gallery show of this project this past May, but because of My recovery with surgery, we had to postpone. Honestly, everything for a reason right? Because it just meant I got to work on this project another year longer.
We will now be unveiling the final gallery show, showcasing digital and film photography, video and some writing by Me about this whole experience in May of 2025.
Of course more blogs on this to come!
Til then:
I am releasing a 2025 calendar with 12 of My favorite images I have shot thus far for this project.
You can check out the Presale Link HERE
Calendars will be mailed out December 3rd! After that a regular link to buy will be available. Some limited edition postcards will also be available in the store at Arrowhead this coming season.
OH! Sorry the photo walk! So I hosted a fall photo walk at Arrowhead! It was glorious fall day in October. Cold enough to need a hoodie, but not enough to make your nose drip. A group of about 8 people got together, and we took a walk from the Melville house through some of My favorite trails. I got to talk about this project and My work there. We all got to make some pictures together. Photographers of varying skill levels, and even an artist who was taking reference photos for paintings. A super positive day.
I of course, was taking photos. Though I have not officially released any of the images from the photo residency yet, I will share some here.
First some of the photo walk participants took some photos of Me! I do so love photos of photographers taking pictures.
Here’s Me in My element:
And here’s some of MY favorite photos I took that day!
Thanks for looking, can’t wait to share more with you as this project develops.
